Shock Testing Information
Simulating high-energy pyrotechnic shock events in the laboratory is an important part of aerospace and spacecraft design and development. Components need to demonstrate survivability and performance to the many shock loads that can occur during flight.
ShockMec Engineering has designed and produced a high-g resonant plate shock test machine that can be used for engineering development and component qualification testing. This modest-sized machine is capable of simulating pyrotechnic and high-energy oscillatory shock events in a small laboratory. The machine supports interchangeable resonant plates for component testing across the entire mid-field and far-field pyrotechnic frequency spectrum. The shock excitation is provided by air-gun driven projectiles. The air-gun is also interchangeable to optimize projectile weight and diameter to the resonant plate frequency. The machine can easily reach shock levels greater than 10,000 SRS g at high frequencies and comparable energy levels at lower frequencies.
Shock test repeatability is excellent across the entire measured frequency range. Test-to-test consistency is enhanced by the resonant plate mounting scheme coupled with the plate design and the ability to match the air gun projectile size to the test frequency.
ShockMec Engineering provides testing services for your components at our facility. In-house data acquisition capability consists of multiple Endevco high-g piezo-resistive shock accelerometers and a Spectral Dynamics VXI high-speed data acquisition system with a 5MHz sample rate. Reasonable testing fees are charged for in-house testing and laboratory time is billed by the day. ShockMec
Engineering can assist
with test planning, fixture
design, and data processing.
Fixture manufacturing or
modifications can be done
using our in-house CNC
milling capability for a
reasonable rate. Contact us

needs or to schedule test
time.
In addition to testing services, ShockMec Engineering will produce and sell the resonant plate shock test machine and the necessary resonant plates. The machine is small enough to fit in any test laboratory with minimal power and compressed air requirements for operation. Operator training would be available. Contact us if interested.
